Author Interview: Kathy Kimbray, Author of A Shifting Of Stars as part of the A Shifting of Stars Blog Tour

In this interview, Kathy provides insights on her writing process and what inspires her.

What inspired you to write A Shifting of Stars?

I love writing YA fantasy, and I’d had some ideas that I’d wanted to include in a story for a while. So I guess it started with just that—a few initial ideas—and they gradually grew into a fully formed plot after lots of working/reworking.

Who was your favourite character to write and why?

Meadow was my favourite character. She underestimates herself—and a lot of people in her life underestimate her as well—but she is stronger than she knows. Since she lost her mother the previous year, her personality is quite different to what it usually is because she’s navigating and coming to terms with how her life is now. It was challenging to weave her grief through everything that was happening in the plot, especially since what she’d gone through shaped a lot of her reactions in the story. However, it also made her really interesting to write about!

Which other novels and authors influence you?

I’m a huge fan of Carrie Ryan’s work. Her writing is amazing.

If you had to read one book for the rest of your life, which book would it be and why?

It would probably be “The Hating Game” by Sally Thorne because it’s funny, heart-warming and can never be read too many times!

What is your research process like when writing?

It depends what I’m writing about. I’ve written books before where I’ve had to research things like sailing, outdoor cooking and archery. I will sometimes go to specific places like the beach or the bush to get a feel for the environment in order to write about it later. And I spend a lot of time walking in circles trying to come up with the perfect word for whatever sentence I happen to be writing.

What advice would you have for inspiring authors?

Go at your own pace and write what you love to read.

Thank you Kathy for answering my questions. A Shifting of Stars is available now.
